The Pest Management System (PIMS) is a repository of all known pests with information on their status in the country. It provides a platform for the public to report and interact with Scientists on the management of detected pests. It also provides a tool for undertaking regular pests scouting projects as part of an early warning system.
The web-based database has information to assist countries access reliable information on pests and reduce intra-regional trade barriers. Target users of PIMS include the general public, private sector, farmers, academia, traders and trading partners/countries among others.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and the WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement call for member country trade regulations to be clearly published. Measures to ensure food safety and to protect the health of animals and plants should be based as far as possible on the analysis and assessment of objective and accurate scientific data.
